…messing about in boats.

I recently picked up a good book about sailboats “Twenty Affordable Sailboats to Take You Anywhere” by Gregg Nestor containing specifications for each boat and simple calculations for safety and comfort. However, there are problems with the calculations. The motion comfort ratio for the Baba 30 caught my eye since it was so far off from the rest of the boats. So I calculated it using the formula in the appendix but checking against the other boats didn’t give the same numbers. A little looking around and some time with a calculator showed Ted Brewer Yacht Design has the formulas actually used by the author. Being an engineer I naturally made up a quick spreadsheet to recalculate the numbers for all the boats. I also added the boats from “Twenty Small Sailboats to Take You Anywhere” by John Vigor for comparison. Click here to download the spreadsheet. Enjoy!

I had the same idea, but not being an engineer (I’m a musician) I seemed to make a mess of some of the formulae from the outset. After a few tries I had a brainwave – “someone else might have done this!”. So here I am. And now I see where I went astray. Many thanks for your labour, it’s much appreciated.
The vast majority of the boats listed in the two books are more easily found across the pond from Ireland, so my next task is to troll the Ads hereabouts and add the ones that take my fancy to the calculations.
    Cheers, and thanks again,
    Warwick.
